Green Tea Associated with Lower Prostate Cancer Risk

Green Tea A Japanese study has recently been published in the online edition of American Journal of Epidemiology regarding the association of green tea intake with that of Prostate Cancer development. A research team from Japan’s health ministry took 49,920 men from across the nation under their study, aging anywhere between 40-69 years of age. The study began in 1990 and this same study group followed up on their health conditions until 2004.

During these years of study, 404 men were diagnosed with prostate cancer. Of these 404 men, 114 were suffering from advanced cases, 271 were localised and 19 were undetermined when it came to their stages. This study showed that the risks of having advance prostate cancer were 50% lower for men who drank more than 5 cups of green tea per day in comparison to the men who drank only 1 cup.

Overall, this study concluded that green tea was not associated with localised cancer but may have been associated in the decreased risks of advanced prostate cancer for the men in the study. In detail, this particular study discovered that a substance called catechin located in green tea may be what is contributing to the decreased risk of advanced prostate cancer. Past studies have shown that catechin curbs the levels of testosterone, a male hormone shown to be a risk factor in the past.

Green tea is not only beneficial for men fighting the advances of prostate cancer or looking to prevent it altogether. Green tea has also been shown to lower high cholesterol levels, prevent cardiovascular disease and enhance any immune system with daily intakes of 5 cups or more a day. These are all common problems and diseases that millions of people throughout the world face on a daily basis and these same people may not be aware that by simply drinking several cups of green tea a day, they could drastically reduce their symptoms and even the chances of developing these problems.

There are several different and strong beneficial substances within green tea which enable it to be such a healing tool. Epigallocatechin Gallate (EGCG) is one of the most prominent substances within green tea which is a powerful antioxidant. This particular substance not only inhibits the growth of cancer cells but it can kill them without harming the already healthy tissue. There are approximately 6 different branches of antioxidants found in green tea but it also contains caffeine, theobromine and theophylline which are all alkaloids which help provide the effects of green tea.

Not only has this study shown that green tea can be a healthy and natural way to lower the risks of advanced prostate cancer but it proves there are many different substances located in green tea which can keep anyone healthy and prevent a number of different yet common diseases and health risks. All it takes is a few cups of green tea per day and you could be preventing a great deal of health risks in your future.

Reishi Mushroom Slows Prostate Cancer Growth, Study Shows

Reishi Mushroom The Reishi mushroom holds medicinal properties and has been used for hundreds of years in traditional Chinese medicine to treat many health conditions. According to a study conducted by Israeli scientists, the Reishi mushroom is also beneficial for those suffering from prostate cancer.

The researchers discovered molecules within the mushroom that repress certain mechanisms associated with the advancement of prostate cancer. The in-vitro trials that were performed demonstrate the mushroom’s ability to directly attack cancer cells.

This study indicates good news for those at risk of developing this common form of cancer. Statistics show there are more than 543,000 new cases of prostate cancer being diagnosed every year. Don’t become another statistic.

This “miracle mushroom” as I like to call it has also shown to combat numerous types of cancer by activating interleukin-2, which is a chemical of the immune system. 

Aside from that, reishi can lower blood pressure. A study reported by Burton Goldberg in “The Definitive Guide To Heart Disease” found that patients who had hypertension that was unresponsive to traditional medications were able to lower their blood pressure significantly by taking reishi extract three times a day for just four weeks!

The mushrooms are also an effective treatment for allergies and asthma and can prevent cirrhosis.

Prior to consuming the mushrooms be sure to boil them, which will destroy any bacteria that may have accumulated on them. The wild reishi mushroom is also widely available in tea and tincture form.

Study Shows Flavanoids In Black Raspberries Wipe Out Leukemia Cancer Cells

Black Raspberries According to a new study published online in the Journal of Biological Chemistry, a naturally occurring antioxidant found in fruits and vegetables can selectively wipe out leukemia cells without harming healthy cells. These findings offer hope of treating leukemia effectively without being toxic. The findings promise an effective, nontoxic approach to treating leukemia.

Corresponding author Xiao-Ming Yin, M.D., Ph.D., associate professor of pathology, University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine stated the following:

“Current treatments for leukemia, such as chemotherapy and radiation, often damage healthy cells and tissues and can produce unwanted side effects for many years afterward. So, there is an intensive search for more targeted therapies for leukemia worldwide.”

Yin and his team of researchers from the University of Pittsburgh isolated and examined the effects of cyanidin-3-rutinoside or C-3-R – which is a naturally modified anthocyanidin from black raspberries – on human leukemia and lymphoma cell cultures. Findings by the researchers show that about half of the human leukemia cells died within 18 hours of treatment with low doses of C-3-R. More than doubling the dosage resulted in all of the leukemia cells dying with the same effect on lymphoma cells.

Most of the focus by Yin and his team was on one of the most common forms of water-soluble flavonoids that give fruits and vegetables their color known as anthocyanidins. These flavanoids are also thought to assist in the attraction of honeybees to plants. The benefits of anthocyanidins in previous studies were noted by the authors.

According to the researchers, C-3-R induced an “oxidative stress” in tumor cells but not in healthy cells. Yin claims these results indicate that C-3-R is highly selective against cancer cells and offers “a very promising approach for treating a variety of human leukemias and, perhaps, lymphomas as well.”

Leukemia and lymphoma are both two types of cancer. The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society states that more than 66,000 new cases of lymphoma were diagnosed in 2006. Statistics reported by the National Cancer Institute indicate an estimated 44,000 cases of leukemia to be diagnosed in the United States in 2007 and some 22,000 leukemia related deaths will occur in 2007.

What we have here folks is just another reason to stick with superfoods like berries and vegetables to avoid toxic treatments like chemotherapy and radiation. As always, the best cure is a good defense. Avoiding processed foods, transfats and other harmful substances will reduce your risk of being part of the grim statistics reported.

Study Shows Garlic Relaxes Arteries And Increases Blood Flow

Garlic For centuries, garlic has been recognized for its healing properties and numerous studies with varying results have been performed to confirm the abilities of garlic to ward off colds and lower cholesterol levels among many other things. Recent research now suggests that garlic can increase blood flow, reduce blood clots and prevent oxidative damage by relaxing arteries.

Clinical tests at the University of Alabama at Birmingham, have indicated tension within blood vessels were reduced by 72% when exposed to crushed garlic juice. The reaction takes place in the cells of the blood vessel lining and causes them to dilate.

This month’s journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences featured a laboratory test that showed red blood cells beginning to emit hydrogen sulphides – a biological messenger that stimulates vessels to open – when exposed to garlic juice. As a result of this reaction, blood pressure is reduced and the oxygen going to various parts of the body which are especially important for vital organs is increased, while pressure on the heart is reduced. These results further solidified findings by researchers from the Albert Einstein College of Medicine earlier this year which suggested that hydrogen sulphide actually prevented heart muscle damage in the event of a heart attack.

While poisonous in high concentrations, a safe amount of hydrogen sulphide is produced naturally by the body. As people get older however, production of Hydrogen Sulphide begins to dissipate. Dr David Kraus, Ph.D., a UAB associate professor in the Departments of Environmental Health Sciences and Biology and the study’s lead author said,

“Our results suggest garlic in the diet is a very good thing. Certainly, in areas where garlic consumption is high, such as the Mediterranean and the Far East, there is a low incidence of cardiovascular disease. It is, however, important to know that large amounts in supplement form may interact with blood thinning drugs and could increase the risk of bleeding.”

The fresh garlic used in the study was the equivalent of eating two cloves of garlic, which is more than most people who do not live in the Mediterranean or the Far East, consume each day.

Dr. Kraus suggested that before cooking with fresh garlic, let it stand for 15 minutes after crushing as this activates the enzyme to raise the healthy constituents of the garlic and so it maximizes the health benefits.

Frank Mangano’s Commentary:

It may cause bad breath and in some cases body odor, but at the end of the day, the Allicin in garlic when digested, causes blood cells to release sulphur compounds which have countless benefits on one’s health. If bad breath and body odor become an issue, consider supplementing with Kyolic, which is an odorless organic high-quality garlic supplement. I take this on a daily basis.

I can’t say enough good things about garlic. Not only is garlic beneficial to cardiovascular health, but it’s also good for infections, cancer, diabetes and many other conditions. Personality Traits Are A Contributing Factor In Alzheimer’s Risk, Study Shows

A study of nearly 1,000 people found that certain personality traits – specifically conscientiousness – appeared to be a significant factor in reducing the risk of Alzheimer’s disease. Even with mental stimulation and exercise taken into account, the link remained strong.

From 1994 to 2006, a Rush University Medical Center study followed 997 Catholic nuns, priests and monks. Neurological exams, cognitive tests and personality surveys were administered to all participants. Answers to such questions as, “I am a productive person who always gets the job done” were the primary basis of the personality test which was structured to determine self-discipline. On a scale from 0 to 48, the average score on this test was 34 points.

Eventually 176 of the participants developed Alzheimer’s disease. The conditions did not develop however, in those whose personalities were meticulous, self-disciplined and productive. In fact, an 89% lower chance of developing Alzheimer’s disease was evident in the participants that scored 40 points or more, than those who scored 28 or lower.

Furthermore, the participants still showed a 54% lower incidence of developing the disease when exercise and intellectual engagement were taken into account.

While Alzheimer’s disease has been linked to amyloid plaques and neurofibrillary tangles in the brain, the plaques and protein tangles in the brains of those who scored high in the self-discipline tests in this study were the same as those who scored low; adding even more puzzlement to a disease that is now being called an epidemic.

Frank Mangano’s Commentary:

Researchers at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health Alzheimer’s disease predict that 1 in 85 persons worldwide could suffer the irreversible dementia characterizing the disease, in a little over 40 years. What scientists may never determine however is the role and impact that variables like environmental toxins, dietary choices, exercise and behavior have on the disease.

As always, the best defense is prevention; and as this study suggests, being more conscientious and self-disciplined can greatly reduce your chances of developing this mind robbing disease. Women Who Breastfeed Reduce Their Risk of Breast Cancer, Study Shows

A study presented at the annual meeting of the American Association for Cancer Research in Los Angeles suggests that by breast feeding, women can reduce their risk of breast cancer, even if they have their first child at a later stage in their life.

Data on women who had participated in the Women’s Contraceptive and Reproductive Experiences (CARE) Study – which had results published in 2003 – was analyzed by researchers to. The current study involved data for 995 women who previously had breast cancer and 1,498 of whom did not; all of which were over the age of 54. The women’s risk of acquiring breast cancer was compared with their history of breastfeeding and their age when they gave birth to the first child.

Each year, 200,000 new cases of breast cancer surface in the United States. It is the third most common cause of cancer-related death in the country. Two main types of breast tumors are associated with this form of cancer: those that contain hormone receptors, and those that don’t.

Previous research has found that a woman’s chance of acquiring hormone-receptor-positive breast cancer is increased by having a first child after the age of 25. Even lower risk of breast cancer risk is evident among women who have their first child before the age of 25.

According to researchers, the findings of the current study suggest that a woman’s risk for both receptor-positive and receptor-negative cancers was decreased by breastfeeding, regardless of the age at which she had her first child.

“As more women may choose to delay pregnancy until after 25, it is important to note that breastfeeding provides protection against both estrogen and progesterone receptor positive and negative tumors,” said Giske Ursin, an associate professor of preventive medicine at the Keck School of Medicine of the University of Southern California.

“Breastfeeding may have a protective effect that negates the increased risk of breast cancer associated with late pregnancies,” he added.

Frank Mangano’s Commentary:

When it comes to breastfeeding, I’m all for it. First off, it’s the natural way a mother can feed her child in place of cow’s milk or formulas containing artificial ingredients. In fact, in my opinion, breastfeeding may represent the most natural act of all human kind.

Secondly, it can help a women shed any excess weight gained during pregnancy.

Third, infants who suffer from acid reflux (as a result of the sphincter not being fully developed) digest natural breast milk easier. It also prevents constipation, reduces the risk of food allergies and protects the baby from numerous infectious diseases.

And last but not least, as this study confirms, breastfeeding can even reduce risk of breast cancer. For some women however, breastfeeding is easier said than done. For the sake of you and your child, take whatever steps necessary to breastfeed.

Vitamin D Helps Stop Bone Loss Caused by Antiseizure Drugs, Study Concludes

A study published in the journal Neurology suggests supplementing with high levels of vitamin D can help stem the bone loss caused by the long-term use of antiseizure medication.

The fact that antiseizure medications used to control epilepsy expedite the breakdown of bones, often leading to bone loss and osteoporosis is old news. The fact that vitamin D increases absorption of calcium during digestion and reduces its excretion through urine thereby increasing the calcium available to the body for maintaining bone structure is also nothing new.

A team of researchers however, wanted to determine if higher levels of vitamin D would be more effective in preventing bone loss. They conducted a study involving 72 adults and 78 children over the age of 10 that were all being treated for epilepsy with antiseizure medications. The researchers gave some of the participants a daily vitamin D supplement of 400 IU, and gave others 4,000 IU for adults and 2,000 IU for children which is a significantly higher amount.

The current daily recommended vitamin D intake is 400 IU, but recent studies have suggested that higher amounts are safe and also more effective in providing numerous health benefits.

At the beginning of the study, all of the adult participants were already experiencing bone loss solidified by the fact that they had a lower bone mineral density (BMD) than healthy adults in the same age group. Over a 1 year period, an improvement in BMD was evident in the adults who received the 4,000 IU treatment, although it still remained below the healthy level. In the adults treated with 400 IU, no improvements in BMD were evident.

All the children involved in the study had healthy BMD when the study began and ended. Both groups given 400 IU and 2,000 IU saw no significant difference.

Frank Mangano’s Commentary:

As I’ve said previously, natural sunlight is your still your best source of vitamin D. As little as a ½ hour a day of sun on the face and hands for darker-skinned people and 15 minutes for lighter-skinned people will provide you with the sufficient amount of daily vitamin D needed. 

Don’t fall into trap of associating natural sunlight with cancer. The sun screens used to block sunlight are far more deadly than 15 to 30 minutes of sunlight each day. Why has the public been lied to all these years and told the sun is bad and sun screen is good? Simple, natural sunlight is free and sun screens are companies in business to make money.

Yoga Provides Benefits To Women With Breast Cancer, Study Concludes

A pilot study published in the Journal of Pain and Symptom Management suggests that by reducing pain and fatigue and raising their spirits, specifically tailored yoga programs may help women with late-stage breast cancer.

“The benefits could include less pain and fatigue, and more vigor, relaxation, and acceptance,” said study leader Dr. James W. Carson of the Duke University Medical Center in Durham, N.C.

The study involved 13 women with breast cancer that had spread to other parts of their bodies with the age average of participants being 59 years, and the average time of diagnosis being seven years previous to the study and tested the effects that a specifically tailored yoga program would have on these women

Over an eight week period, the women attended a yoga class which included breathing, mediation and gentle yoga postures, as prescribed by the “Yoga of Awareness” program, which is specifically designed to help with emotional distress once a week. According to the researchers, the yoga exercises demonstrated immediate benefits in “significantly boosting daily invigoration and a sense of acceptance”. Relaxation was improved and pain relief was evident as well.

“Greater practice on a given day was associated with improvements not only on the same day, but the next day as well,” the researchers wrote. The new study “provides some of the first, tentative evidence for yoga’s potential benefits in this vulnerable population of women with limited life expectancy,” they concluded.

In women across the world, breast cancer is the most common cancer, taking the most amounts of lives among them as well. In women who reach the age of 90, roughly 25% will suffer from this form of cancer at some point in their lives.

Aside from that, other parts of the body can be affected by breast cancer as it spreads through the lymph nodes under the arms or through blood vessels, most commonly to the bones. Once it spreads to the bones, the cancer is then considered incurable by conventional oncologists. Treatment however, may prolong the life of a patient for several years.

While the best form of treatment is a preventative approach through getting sufficient exercise and eating the right foods, it’s nice to know that in cases where cancer is evident, there are more alternative treatments available now then ever as demonstrated in this study. Yoga has been a favorite from of exercise for me for some time.

Artificial Food Additives Increase Hyperactivity Risk in Children, Study Finds

A study published in The Lancet further solidifies the link between commonly used artificial food colorings and the preservative sodium benzoate and hyperactivity in children. The study’s findings have reignited justified actions by activists on a mission to ban artificial food additives from food who’s target audience is children.

Dr. Jim Stevenson, lead author of the study said “We now have clear evidence that mixtures of certain food colours and benzoate preservative can adversely influence the behaviour of children.”

Conducted out of the University of Southampton in the U.K., the study involved of 153 three-year-olds and 144 children between the ages of eight and nine. Each child was assigned to one of two groups. One group was drinking juice spiked with a cocktail of artificial additives at levels ordinarily found in sweets, beverages, and other common foods including  Sunset Yellow (E110), ponceau 4R (E124), carmoisine (E122), tartazine (E102), quinoline yellow (E104), allura red (E129), and the common preservative sodium benzoate; while the second group drank a placebo juice free of artificial additives.

The children in the group consuming beverages containing the additives were then divided into two subgroups consuming one of two different cocktails — “A” and “B”. Roughly twice the amount of chemicals – approximating a UK child`s average daily intake of food additives – was given to the children in subgroup B.

Following these actions, was an evaluation of the children using what is referred to as a “global hyperactivity aggregate”. This evaluation is based on a computerized test and ratings from teachers and parents. Trained professionals also contributed observations.

After a six week period, the behavior of the three year olds was significantly affected by Mix A although results from Mix B varied. A significant effect on the eight and nine year olds was evident from both mixes, resulting in a measurable and cogent increase in hyperactivity. These findings “lend strong support for the case that food additives exacerbate hyperactive behaviors (inattention, impulsivity, and overactivity) in children at least up to middle childhood,” wrote the authors.

Following the study were warnings to parents asking them to pay close attention to the possible deleterious effects of these type of additives, especially in children exhibiting signs of overactivity from various agencies around the world including Britain`s Food Standards Agency (FSA).

Frank Mangano’s commentary:

Well, while it’s a bit disappointing to learn of these findings (if you hadn’t been convinced already), what is encouraging is the fact that agencies around the world are at least taking action to open the eyes of parents ignorant or uneducated to the fact that they are poisoning their children.

I saw a commercial recently for Sunny Delight which painted a picture of a common household with young children. After running around and playing sports, the child goes to the fridge for a “refreshing” glass of Sunny D. This is like giving your child a tall glass of soda and perhaps even worse. It’s marketed almost as an orange juice but one quick glance at the ingredients list will surely change your mind. Remember, high fructose corn syrup is pure poison.
