Sunlight - Sunlight 2006

Some doctors are becoming far less trigger-happy when prescribing antibiotics. And for good reason.

According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention, one-third of 150 million outpatient prescriptions for antibiotics are unnecessary. These unnecessary prescriptions have spawned so-called “superbugs”—viral strains that have become immune to overused antibiotics, becoming stronger and more resistant in the process.

Even though viral infections are beyond the reach of antibiotics capabilities, the new strictures on prescribing such medications have left cold and flu sufferers stranded on where to turn for relief. That is until researchers’ recent finding that the sun may be just what the doctor ordered.

Researchers from the Department of Microbiology, Immunology and Molecular Genetics out of UCLA have discovered that the radiation the sun emits acts as a natural antibiotic for those bathing under its rays. The antibiotic effect comes from the vitamin D that sunlight and ultra-violet radiation naturally produces, which form the antimicrobial peptides that help the body destroy viral and bacterial cells.

The idea for researching this rather odd phenomenon came about after reviewing the history behind using irradiation as a means to cure different diseases.

One of the most successful methods was developed in the 1920s by Dr. Emmett Knott who would remove 5 percent of a person’s blood, anti-coagulate it, expose it to the UVB an UVC forms of radiation and then pump the blood back into the person’s body. This has become known as the “Knott Technic.”

While the procedure may sound a little “out there,” it worked wonders for those with vitamin D deficiencies such as rickets and tetany.

Many successful medical procedures have since been documented on irradiation and its efficacy. In 1942, for example, Professor George Miley at Hahnemann Hospital in Philadelphia used the “Knott Technic” on 103 of his patients with life-threatening infections like pneumonia, sepsis, pelvic abscesses and wound infections. Based on each person’s rate of infection, he classified them into groups: early, moderately advanced or moribund (approaching death). Amazingly, considering such positive results were unheard of at the time, 100 percent of the early patients fully recovered, 98 percent of the moderately advanced fully recovered (46 of 47) and just under half of the moribund patients fully recovered (17 of 36)!

Now, you may be wondering why, if blood irradiation was so successful a model as to be used as an antibiotic, it’s not used today.

Well, due to the American Medical Association’s later research on its efficacy, they determined that while the procedure was safe, their results were less than promising. It led one member of the AMA to say, “A longer more extensive program of study is warranted before in vivo ultraviolet irradiation of blood can be finally either accepted or rejected.”

One place it hasn’t been rejected is in Russia, where doctors and scientists today use it successfully as a standard form of treatment for severe infections including tuberculosis, which corresponds to UCLA researchers’ findings. Irradiation treatment is also used in Germany.

With all the bad news you hear about exposure to the sun’s rays, it’s nice to finally hear some good news. True, overexposure can do some serious damage to your skin and too much vitamin D can be deadly, safe exposure to the sun serves as yet another example of a natural method proven to ward off illness.
