Past articles I’ve written on Co-enzyme Q10 have focused on how this ubiquitous enzyme is so important to our heart health. But there’s a new body of research suggesting how this Co-Q10 is important to sexual health as well, as supplementing with it appears to improve sperm count and quality. Co-Q10 is the engine of cellular energy. Without Co-Q10, ATP – the body’s so-called “energy currency” – couldn’t be produced. But as we age, Co-Q10 becomes far less ubiquitous and must be supplemented in order to maintain healthy levels and maintain energy. So it really comes as no surprise that Co-Q10 may factor in to a couple’s reproductive ability, as a healthy sperm count is essential to whether a baby is in a couple’s future. But let’s get to the details of the study, shall we? The study involved over 200 men, who were told to supplement with either a placebo or a 300 mg Co-Q10 pill for half a year. They observed the sperm count of these men before the trial, at the conclusion of their 26-week supplementation period, and then again 30 weeks later, to see if any changes were apparent in their sperm count or quality. And boy did they ever observe some changes – in those that supplemented with Co-Q10, at least. In that group, the researchers observed a 100 percent improvement in a sperm’s “acrosome reaction,” which is a fancy way of referring to a sperm’s ability to fertilize the ovum. There was also improvement in sperm movement, or to use the scientifically precise word, the sperm’s “motility.” Among the placebo group? Not so much. That group had a mere one percent improvement in acrosome reaction. The study has since been published and appears in the Journal of Urology. The research was conducted by researchers from Shahid Beheshti University in Iran. Now, these researchers had the men supplement with a Co-Q10 supplement made by Kaneka. Kaneka makes yeast-fermented Co-Q10 supplements, which is indeed an all-natural ingredient, but I personally am unfamiliar with it as a supplement. But based on what I’ve read and researched – and based on this study alone – it seems like a quality Co-Q10 source. Personally, though, I prefer Jarrow Formula’s Q10 Absorb. The great thing about Jarrow’s is that their Q10 supplement is oil-based, and in order for Co-Q10 to be properly absorbed, it needs to be oil-based. To maintain heart health, start supplementing with Co-Q10. And if you’re concerned about maintaining a healthy sperm count, guys, Co-Q10 may be just the thing you’re looking for. (Note: In the interest of full disclosure, while there was improvement in sperm mobility and acrosome reaction, the researchers did not notice any noticeable difference in pregnancy rates among either group of participants.)
