There are certain home remedies that should be present at home, the doctor says. These home remedies are important in cases of emergencies, such as injury, nausea and vomiting, common colds and cough. Doctors thought these are necessary in every home because it can easily alleviate circumstances that do not necessarily warrant a visit to the emergency room. These home remedies are natural and affordable in groceries and market. Make sure to store these in your kitchen and make sure to remember for that purpose they are in case situations will occur.

  1. Honey

Many doctors recommend honey as part of your home remedy. So it is imperative to have stocks of honey in your cupboard in case you need it instantly. For many people, honey is a form of indulgence, but they should consider the fact that this thick golden liquid has huge amounts of health benefits.

Honey is a sweetener processed naturally by the bees. During fair weather, honey visits one flower to another collecting its nectar. The nectar is then mixed with the enzyme found in the honey’s saliva and deposited in the bee hives, and this is consumed as honey by humans. Without any other compounds added to the honey, it is of huge health benefits as a home remedy.

First, honey is an effective antibacterial, antiviral and antifungal substance. Several studies have been made showing that honey keeps away or traps microorganisms that invade the body. That is why, when honey is applied to wounds, wounds have faster rate of healing than any other drugs.

Second, a special type of honey called buckwheat honey has shown effectiveness in reducing nocturnal cough and difficulty of sleeping due to cough. Several children were studied and results were compared to subjects who were taking cough medicine called dextromethorphan. The study showed that there is reduction in coughing tendencies of sleeping children who were given buckwheat honey before they sleep than those who are taking dextromethorphan or are not taking anything at all.

Lastly, when honey is taken daily by spoonful, compounds with antioxidant components have shown to increase in the body; thereby increasing the body’s defense from the free radicals that destroy the body.

  2. Salt

And why would salt be included in the list when it is almost always a mainstay in the pantry? This is essentially just a reminder for everybody not to be careless in stocking the kitchen with salt; not just because salt enhances the taste of food, but it has an important role in balancing the fluids inside your body. The components of salt, sodium and chloride, are important electrolytes that help in the retention of water in the body. A normal adult must maintain 60 percent water in the body. If the body fluid decreases, there will be health problems such as weakness. Normally the body has a thirst instinct, so there is always that craving for water to satisfy the thirst mechanism. Salt however, retains some of the fluids. Without salt, there will be problems with the blood pressure, and worst, there will be dehydration. Additionally, salt helps in the contraction of muscles. When one experiences muscle cramping, this is because salt is lacking in the body to keep the normal amount of calcium in the blood. Too much of salt, however, is dangerous since it can develop diseases such as hypertension. But keep on remembering that salt is essential in any homes to remedy dehydration and muscle cramping.

  3. Peppermint Tea

One of the most common health problems is stomach aches caused by indigestion, dyspepsia or spasms of the intestinal muscles. While some stomach aches may have underlying complicated medical reason, some stomach aches are simple and can only be relieved by drinking peppermint tea. That’s the reason why doctors advise you to keep peppermint tea at the kitchen cupboard all the time to help remedy any tummy aches. Aside from stomach aches, peppermint tea is effective in making breathing easier, especially for those who have allergic rhinitis. Not just through inhaling the steam of the cup of tea, but also through drinking it can be relieved since peppermint contains rosmarinic acid which encourages the making of prostacyclins in cells. Prostacyclins are thought to help in allowing the airways to open or relax for easy breathing. Asthma sufferers will benefit a lot by drinking peppermint tea regularly. Peppermint tea comes from a hybrid of mint plant. It has a strong cooling effect when taken. This sensation is sometimes enough to relieve those who have nasal clogging problems caused by colds. While it is great to use fresh peppermint leaves, peppermint tea in a bag is much easier to prepare. So keep your home prepared all the time with peppermint tea.

  4. Oatmeal

Interestingly, oatmeal must be always be present at home not just because it is a good source of fiber and other nutrients but because it can help in vomiting episode, especially in children. When a child is vomiting, oatmeal may be added to boiling water with sweetener and drank until the vomiting stops. It will help relax the stomach, as well as provide the body with enough fluids to replenish the lost fluids during vomiting. Oatmeal is also good for skin conditions such as itching and drying skin. In fact, oatmeal skin products are available in the market to help relieve itchiness and dryness. But the most effective of course is the natural ones since it contains the compounds necessary to alleviate the condition.

  5. Licorice Root

It’s the root of the licorice plant, of course. It is used to make medicines, beverages and added to give flavor to foods. Several homes store licorice candy, not just because of its flavor, but because it helps in situations, such as stomach aches, colic, heartburn and gastritis. For many families, they also use licorice if a family member has cough or sore throat, since for several years; it has been proven that licorice root can actually relieve these symptoms. For instant relief of these conditions, don’t forget to stock your pantry with licorice root or licorice candy.
