Beta-1,3-glucan is a form of highly purified yeast. It is essentially a polysaccharide molecule made completely with glucose, which is a simple saccharide that is transformed by the body to energy as ATP and is stored in muscles, liver and other tissues in a form of glycogen.
Beta-1,3-glucan has a long scientific history of beneficial effects on the immune system among other things. It’s beneficial for treating various bacterial, viral and fungal diseases. Beta 1,3 glucan enhances the immune system by activating a specific receptor on the surface of certain cells, called macrophages3. This activation in turn, triggers a series of events that take place in the body, which put it in a position to defend itself. The macrophages that become activated by beta 1,3 glucan position the body to shield itself in numerous ways. First of all, macrophages can recognize and kill tumor cells and remove foreign debris from the body. Plus, they can produce a number of essential cytokines that provide an overall enhancement to the immune system and boost bone marrow production. Human studies on glucan began in the 1970's after extensive studies in animals. According to Dr. Peter Mansell, subcutaneous nodules of malignant melanoma were resolved within a few days after an injection of glucan. Oral studies with beta-1,3-glucan conducted at the US Armed Forces Radiobiology Institute yielded results that were pretty remarkable as well. A well-controlled study involving rats that were given a lethal dose of radiation showed that when given a dose of yeast beta glucan by mouth after the radiation, 70% of the rats were completely protected from effects of the radiation. Later research with oral application of beta-1,3-glucan showed it to enhance the effectiveness of other oral cholesterol-reducing agents, such as Niacin and Lopid. The effects of beta 1,3 glucan can be extremely beneficial for people with impaired immunity from conditions like HIV infection as well as people undergoing chemotherapy and radiotherapy. The same is true for people over age 40 whose immune system reactivity may be slowing down as a result of aging. Beta 1,3 glucan can also be very helpful for people with high risk of atherosclerosis as the activation of the macrophage help to draw extra cholesterol from the blood and prevent further plaque formation on the arterial walls as well. Beta-glucans are naturally occurring in barley and oats. You can also find beta 1, 3 glucan at your local health food store in supplement form.
* Important notes: It is recommended that you seek the advice of a qualified healthcare practitioner prior to using beta glucan or any alternative therapies. The recommended doses are for those over age 18 unless otherwise stated. Always check herb and vitamin use with your child’s health care practitioner prior to administering them.
