Hemorrhoids are often an inconvenience.  It makes the simplest of tasks, such as sitting up to read a book, very uncomfortable. For most people, having hemorrhoids can be a cause for embarrassment. After all, one would not want to always make up an excuse why you need to stay at home and miss out on Friday night’s fun all the time – it simply is not easy explaining to everyone that something in your anus is bothering you.

There are two types of hemorrhoids namely, the internal hemorrhoid and the external hemorrhoid. An external hemorrhoid occurs in the opening or under the skin of the circumference of the anus. It is painful when irritated and has become swollen. Sometimes it is itchy due to skin irritation. It is prone to blood clot if the vein ruptures. An internal hemorrhoid occurs inside the rectum. It is usually not painful due to this area’s lack pain receptors. It is prone to bleeding when irritated.  If left untreated it may lead to severe forms of hemorrhoids.

Hemorrhoids or piles are painful to live with.  Conversely, our tradition has unfolded several remedies that can be prepared at the domestic level to keep hemorrhoids in check. Uncertainty in using over the counter medications convinces one to use home remedies in dealing with hemorrhoids. It does not require complicated methods and do not post harmful side effects. If you feel some pain, itchiness and bleeding in the anal area, it’s time for you to look for a remedy that right away eases the uncomfortable symptoms that you have. Fortunately, hemorrhoids respond to basic self-care methods like home remedies.  Here are some home remedies that are safe, natural, convenient and effective.

  • Acupuncture

Acupuncture provides relief for millions of people from an assortment of ailments principally hemorrhoids. Acupuncture can be of some use in relieving the symptoms of internal hemorrhoids classified as grades 1 & 2.  Usually, grades 3 & 4 warrants surgical intervention. Acupuncture uses special points in treating hemorrhoids. It is an alternative way of treating hemorrhoids by manipulating needles in the body.

  • Citrus fruits

Eat plenty of citrus fruits. It contains bioflavonoids that are involved in maintaining homeostasis in the walls of small blood vessels which in turn decreases vulnerability to hemorrhoids.  It contains anti-inflammatory and anti-oxidant properties. By eating plenty of citrus fruits you may possibly find that your symptom will be alleviated.

  • Fiber

Fibers assist in keeping our bowel movements normal and ward off some diseases. It not only reduces the risk of colon cancer but it also helps transport cholesterol out of our body thereby reducing the risk of heart disease.  If one experiences the symptoms of hemorrhoids, it is an important move to gradually incorporate fiber into your diet to make bowel movement easier. Straining or forcing one’s self when defecating can irritate the anal area.  A rapid increase of fiber into your food can cause gas, diarrhea, or abdominal cramps. Typically, gas is expected to increase but as the body starts to adapt, this will settle in a week or two as the bacteria that dwell in your colon and your system adjust to your new diet. This is also to ensure that your symptoms will not return. You can also get other benefits other than hemorrhoid remedy by adding fiber to your diet.

  • Pomegranate

Pomegranate is known for its strong astringent content which has been found useful in the treatment of hemorrhoids. To start, peel the pomegranate. Then put pomegranate in a small amount of water and boil for ten minutes then strain. Drink a glassful of boiled pomegranate once in the morning and once in the evening. This remedy also helps in removing the piles quickly.

  • Witch Hazel Ointment

Consider buying witch hazel pads, witch hazel liquid or the witch hazel ointment. This is a topical relief for hemorrhoids.  Witch hazel has astringent properties that can help to reduce the size of the swollen blood vessels that will help ease bleeding and itching of the affected areas. Apply to the affected area using cotton wool compress. It is recommended that you keep a bottle of witch hazel in the refrigerator.

  • Yoga

Yoga can help ease the symptoms of piles through its different positions. You do a variety of positions along with meditation and then you supplement it with eating healthy foods. Different Yoga positions can invigorate internal organs and glands which is helpful for function of the liver. Consult your physician before doing yoga exercise for personalized advice.

There are many ways to prevent or alleviate the symptoms of hemorrhoids. Some of them are very basic things such as:

  • Drinking plenty of water each day, with a minimum of eight large glasses daily.
  • Taking a walk so that your digestive tract will work efficiently.
  • Incorporate fiber in your everyday foods. This will help promote normal and regular bowel movements.
  • Keep in mind that improving your bowel movement habits will be of great help.  Do not wait too long before you respond to the urge to eliminate. The relatively long duration the feces stay in the lower portion of the digestive tract, the more risk for moisture to be lost, making the stool hard and dry thereby resulting in constipation.
  • Most importantly, keep the area of your anus clean at all times. Residue from the stool can irritate the skin, as well as, forceful rubbing using dry toilet paper. The use of a bidet toilet is therefore highly recommended.

These are the very basic things that we tend to take for granted and that if only we practice these habits religiously, it can be of great help. It is a matter of doing the right things to prevent the development of hemorrhoids and these are already within our reach. Sometimes, we tend to forget that we don’t really need aggressive forms of treatment because the very basic things that we have in the house, or a simple modification of habits, can help prevent or manage hemorrhoids.
