Many people are under the impression today that there is nothing one person can do to prevent global warming. This could not be further from the truth. One person can make a difference because it only takes one person to inspire another and then thousands of people are all doing what they can throughout the day to improve the environment. Each and every day there are dozens of decisions we can make to help the environment instead of further harming it. Often we do not even recognize these opportunities when they are right in front of us because we are not aware of their potential. All we have to do is change our lifestyle in a slight way in order to utilize the options that make our earth greener. Some “go green” options you may want to consider for your life include:
- Monitor your electricity use by turning off your computers and electronics when you are not using them as well as lights throughout your home.
- Bring and use cloth bags when you go grocery shopping in order to eliminate the excess plastic that cannot be recycled.
- Choose to air dry your clothing during the warm months of the year to reduce energy costs.
- Weatherize your home in order to prevent the leaks, which can cause you to use more heat and air conditioning than you really need. This means use insulation and weather stripping around windows and doors.
- Replace your old appliances with newer and more energy efficient models.
- If you are in the market for a new car, shop around for a fuel-efficient car that produces less gas emissions into the atmosphere such as a Hybrid.
- Buy organically grown foods or locally produced foods.
- Reduce the amount of garbage that goes through your household.

Many people are not aware that the garbage they put on the side of the road each week for pick up is a large contributor to global warming. Landfills have been the perfect solution for our waste for decades and only today are we recognizing its harmful affects. One of the main problems and impacts of landfills has to do with emissions. They have been found to be a major contributor to the green house effect because of these landfill gas emissions. Even with the best gas extraction systems it is believed that at least ½ of the methane created in the landfill make it's way into the atmosphere without being burnt. Global warming is something each of us contributed to and therefore we should all begin to find out just how we can help eliminate the problem. Although it is true global warming is not going to simply disappear you can help reduce the affects for generations to come through the choices you make today. No matter how small the action may seem it can have a great impact on the environment when everyone chooses to make these small efforts throughout the day.
