A novel study performed by Clinical Investigators from the National Research Council in Canada aimed to discover whether or not vitamin B3 or niacin can be used as a new treatment for common fungal infections - such as the common yeast infection caused by Candida albicans.

Yeast infections commonly affect sexually active individuals, as well as those with HIV-AIDS.

Cancer patients who are undergoing chemotherapy and other similar cancer treatments can also experience yeast infections because chemotherapy often causes mass death of the beneficial bacteria that naturally controls the yeast population in the body.

There are numerous conventional medical treatments for yeast infections - however, the fact remains that as these pathogens are exposed to drugs, the more resistant they become to treatment over time.  It is common for pathogens to become less of a threat but suddenly evolves into a drug-resistant strain after some time.

What did the researchers discover with their study?  First, the scientists were able to isolate a specific enzyme called Hst3 in the yeast Candida albicans, which is largely responsible for the normal growth of yeast cells.

Using an animal model, the researchers used nicotinamide (a form of vitamin B3) to inhibit the formation of the enzyme Hst3 in Candida cells.

The result? The yeast cells became less active and less virulent - which led to the question, can vitamin B3 be the natural treatment for yeast infections that many have been looking for?

There is another reason why there is a race to find an alternative and potent treatment for fungal infections like Candida-related yeast infections.
