Researchers from the International Agency for Research on Cancer, based in France, are now looking at vitamin B6 and two other compounds in a new light: it appears that individuals with higher levels of vitamin B6 are 50% less likely to develop or suffer mortality from lung cancer. The study involved more than 350,000 individuals who were presently smoking or were former smokers. According to the researchers, headed by Johansson, Relton and Euland, vitamin B6 and methionine (another vital compound that is usually found in proteins) are known for protecting and maintaining human DNA. These compounds are also responsible for normalizing gene expression – which is important if you want to prevent lung cancer, especially lung cancer (which is more prevalent in countries where tobacco companies have been successful). An estimated 33% of all adult, European males are smokers. Cigarettes contain an estimated 4,000 chemical compounds, at least sixty of which are identified as carcinogenic or cancer-causing. When the body is continually exposed to carcinogenic compounds, the body requires more antioxidants to disable the free radicals and toxins being absorbed by the body through regular smoking. Folate is the 3rd compound that the French researchers looked at it in terms of reducing the actual number of cancer cells in the lungs. The researchers stated the combination of high levels of folate plus an above-median level of vitamin B6 in the bloodstream can help reduce up to sixty-six percent of cancer cells. Natural cancer prevention Natural cancer prevention entails strengthening the immune system and maintaining normal gene expression. What we eat and drink has a large role in cancer prevention. Foods and beverages that are rich in polyphenolic compounds or polyphenols are especially helpful in preventing the growth of cancer cells and tumors. Green vegetables that are rich in chlorella and chlorophyll are integral parts of an anti-cancer diet. This type of food enhances the immune function; chlorella on the other hand, can actually help cancer patients by eliminating some of the side effects associated with conventional cancer treatments. Chlorella (which is often sold in supplement form) is also being currently studied for its direct anti-cancer properties. Foods that are rich in carotenoids may also help reduce the incidence of the following: lung cancer, colorectal cancer, uterine cancer and prostate cancer. To get your daily dose of carotenoids, you can eat apricot, carrots, lemon, lime (and other citrus fruits), squash and even tomatoes (which is also rich in lycopene, another cancer-fight compound). To protect yourself from free-radical damage, you can eat more vegetables from the cruciferous family (cabbages, cauliflowers, etc.). These vegetables are loaded with sulfur-containing compounds and nutrients that can help detoxify the body and even help balance a woman's hormone balance (which is important in preventing breast cancer). Garlic, a world-popular spice, can also help in boosting the immune function and in slowing down the growth of potentially cancerous tumors. Sources: |
