Amino Acids - Amino Acids 2008
Written by Frank Mangano

Arginine is an amino acid with the unique and strong capabilities to repel and eliminate the growth of tumors and cancer. Arginine has the ability to do this by enhancing the function of the immune system by actually increasing the size of the thymus gland. The thymus gland is incredibly important when it comes to the manufacturing of T lymphocytes, which is an essential component found within the immune system. Therefore from this information and basic understanding you can now see how Arginine may be beneficial for those suffering from AIDS and other diseases and conditions that are known to suppress the immune system’s functions.

The benefits of Arginine do not stop here; this amino acid also helps with liver conditions such as cirrhosis and fatty liver. Arginine helps detoxify the liver by neutralizing ammonia, which may help eliminate the effects of alcoholism down the road. From here Arginine has been found to be a key component when it comes to muscle metabolism and weight loss. It is able to help maintain the proper nitrogen balance within the body by helping with the excretion process of the nitrogen. Many studies have shown the results of Arginine within this process when it comes to those who have just undergone surgery and require additional nitrogen to help repair the tissue growth within their bodies.

In regards to weight loss, Arginine helps to increase the muscle mass within your body and decrease the amount of body fat, which for many people provides them with the boost they need to begin losing weight steadily and consistently. Amino acids such as Arginine are produced by the body for the most part but in infants, sometimes this process does not begin early enough, which is why Arginine and other amino acids are important ingredients in infant foods. For adults, there are foods that you can consume as well that are high in Arginine so you too can reap the benefits. Some of these common foods include:

  • Legumes

  • Chickpea

  • Coconut

  • Oats

  • Peanuts

  • Wheat

  • Walnuts

Many of these foods are foods that we all love and eat on a daily or regular basis and this can be reassuring for anyone wondering about their Arginine and amino acid levels. From here of course supplementation is an option for you but if you are currently consuming any of these foods regularly, it is more than likely that supplementing is not necessary for you.
